John 7:37, 38(KJV):
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
Jesus Christ’s intention is to become one with you, such that you are in Him and He is in you. This is the deepest form of relationship. It is the highest type of fellowship where the two parties involved are no longer 2 different entities. They no longer have different mindsets, their desires become one and the same. Their vision becomes one, they agree on every matter because they no longer have conflicting personal interests. Their ideology becomes one and so what is proper to one is proper to the other.
This is how God desires to be with every human being—He desires to be in perfect absolute intimacy with us. This is why He made us in His image and gave us His likeness—so we can fellowship with Him. God’s likeness carries a certain nature and any being that doesn’t carry this nature cannot have fellowship with Him. Thus, He gave us His nature, so we can commune with Him and He with us. This was God’s intention from the beginning, but sin came in and we all lost the image and nature of God. We could no longer fellowship in absolute intimacy with God. But then that is why Christ came to the cross, so we can be transformed back into God’s image and nature and then fellowship in absolute intimacy with Him, where He is in us and we are in Him.
I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one…
The Benefit of being One with Christ
The result of being in absolute intimacy with Christ is that we live life in His glory and spend eternity in His glory. (John 17:24).
Living life in Christ’s glory implies living in a supernatural reality. In a reality that is above this natural earthly realm. It implies that the facts which bind this natural realm do not apply to you, that is, you operate in God’s supernatural realm which is bound by His Truth—His Word. God’s supernatural realm will become your reality. When there are cries and heartaches of economic breakdowns and general financial strain, such cannot affect you if your own reality is God’s supernatural realm. Such things are elements of this natural realm. Becoming one with Christ puts you above these earthly things, and Jesus’ word in Matthew 6:31-33 becomes your reality.
The Roadmap to Becoming One with Christ
How then can you attain oneness with Christ? Is there a roadmap or formula? Yes there is! And Jesus Himself gave us this formula in John 7:37, 38.
•First you must THIRST
•Secondly, you must act on your thirst by COMING to the One who can quench your thirst
•Thirdly, you must receive water from Him: you must DRINK of the Living Waters
•Fourth, you have to enforce all 3 above by BELIEVING
When you truly do these above, as seen in verse 38 of the scripture, you become a living expression of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the expression of Christ on earth now and you are the vessel through whom the Holy Spirit will express Himself. Christ fills your entire being and you are in Him so much that your every expression is an expression of Christ Himself.
(thirst+come+drink)believe=Oneness with Christ
However, what does it really mean to thirst? What does Christ actually mean when He asks us to come, and drink? What does it really mean to believe the way scripture says we should? Christ meant something deeper than what meets the eyes. If He specifically said “he that believeth on Me, as the scripture has said”, it means that there is a way that seems like believing but really is not. We will examine these part by part through the next couple of posts.
May the Holy Spirit open the eyes of our understanding in Jesus’ Name. Amen
